It's an extraordinary performance by Hanks, his version of Phillips living and breathing in the moment. He has to be charming, he has to be wry, he has to inflect with absolute precision, and we have to know that one wrong move means a bullet through his skull. Hanks has the range to play these moments in one instance, Phillips is buying time with the pirates while secretively dictating directions to his team via intercom - and all while scared shitless. There's no reason why the Somalis should spare his or anyone else's lives, making every one of Phillips' words vital. So he hides his crew and talks his way to safety. Hanks is basically a Wild West gunslinger or Schwarzenegger in Commando, except he doesn't have a six-shooter or bazooka at hand (in fact the MV Maersk Alabama wasn't equipped with any weapons).

Captain Phillips is a movie about procedure and problem solving when lives are on the line. As history tells us, the pirates do climb on board - climbing a ladder against the boat's water cannon defense - forcing Phillips to be even more resourceful. He takes his skiff and pushes own towards the freighter. But a particularly driven pirate, Muse (Abdi), won't fall back. He even throws in a bit of trickery, conversing with himself on an open walkie channel, making the pirates believe that they were targeted for air strake. He loses half the pursuing Somali pirates with full-engine force and wake blockades. For a moment, his standard operating procedure looks like it could work. He approaches the situation in the same way he would any other task: step-by-step, completely by the book. A few days later, Phillips is defending himself and his crew while en route to Mombasa, Kenya. We meet him driving to the airport with his wife, wondering how they'll get their youngest kid back on track in school. Phillips isn't a “hero.” He's just a guy with a job running a cargo ship. The movie is a deconstructed thriller that allows people to act like people, with Hanks and newcomer Barkhad Abdi, as the Somali captain, delivering two riveting performances. Greengrass and screenwriter Billy Ray clash the American crewmen and the impoverished Somalis without ever reducing them to stereotypes. The difference is Captain Phillips immerses every character, “good” and “bad,” into a pressure cooker and hands them AK47s. Run-of-the-mill action movies have killers descending on unknowing prey, slow burn searches through dimly-lit corridors, and standoffs set to the booming beats of a ticking clock.
